ADM already knows which year is which
ADM and the barge lines live this as boredom in ordinary years and as a repricing in skinny years. Trucks can help. They cannot be the river. Americans rediscover the river every time it fails them, then forget it when the barges move. ADM does not forget. When the usual buyer in Beijing is quiet, as the Brazil soy piece already showed, ADM, Bunge and Cargill will twitch on headlines. They cannot invent a second river between planting and harvest. They can only reroute what the water allows.
St. Louis is where the harvest meets the barge math. A harvest that wants Gulf export and finds a skinny channel at Memphis does not become a different crop. It becomes inland grain looking for trucks. Trucks take overflow. They cannot be the Mississippi through harvest. ADM already knows which year is which because the company lives on both sides of that sentence every season.
Cairo is where the pile becomes famous
Bunge and Cargill sit on the same river. An elevator above a closed lock is a pile, not a harvest that left. Cairo, Illinois, is where that fact becomes famous. The theme names Cairo as the place the river makes itself famous. That is not poetry. It is where the confluence stops pretending the crop moved when the lock did not. A restriction through harvest is the river making itself known.
Gulf export is the second door the Midwest wants when the barge line stalls. The Authority's draft notices from 2023 and 2024 are the record there. Here the record is Memphis and Baton Rouge. Different climate. Same timetable.
Panama's cousin in a different climate
This is Panama's cousin in a different climate. Water sets a timetable that models treat as a constant. A skinny river makes the Midwest inland. A skinny lake makes Asia and the US East Coast farther apart. The Canal Authority does not refill Gatún with politics. The Corps does not refill the Mississippi with a press release. Gatún is also drinking water for Panama City on the forward page. The Mississippi is also America's export highway for grain. Both fail quietly until they fail loudly.
Second-order objects on this theme are barges, grain, Gulf export, and trucks. That is the whole supply chain in four nouns. Barges when the channel holds. Grain when the harvest arrives whether or not the channel holds. Gulf export when the water allows. Trucks when it does not. None of those nouns replaces another through harvest. They only share the year.
A calm year without a restriction would be a quiet success, which is what the Panama theme already called success on the isthmus. Success on the Mississippi looks like boredom: barges moving, ADM not explaining geography to Chicago, Bunge and Cargill not rerouting crush because a lock stalled. It is proof the river was generous this season.
The draft at Memphis is the harvest. The speech about infrastructure is optional. See the notice before the photo of a full elevator. It becomes one when the water publishes a restriction and the trucks get the year the barge could not take.
A skinny river at Memphis makes the Midwest inland. Trucks can take overflow. They cannot replace the barge.
