Florida keeps gaining residents as insurers quietly leave the coast

Florida still gains people as insurers leave the coast. The premium is the map, not the weather story.

A window over water and hills, one contrail.
Window, water, one contrail.

People arrive with furniture. Counties issue permits. A national carrier does the sums after a wet season and leaves. The vans keep coming. The underwriters do not.

Citizens grows when the private carriers leave the water.

Progressive and Travelers can choose another state. When they do, Citizens sets the price of living near the Gulf.

A moving van is a demographic fact. An insurance exit is a market fact. They can happen in the same year. Neither is a hurricane forecast.

Citizens is not a figure of speech. It is the leftover book. A state that keeps issuing coastal permits while that book grows has chosen a price.

The inbound van to Tampa and the non-renewal from Travelers can share a Saturday. California fire country uses the FAIR Plan the same way. Texas hail uses leftover pools the same way.

Lee County can keep issuing permits. That does not make the hill cheap to write. It makes Citizens larger.

Trepp does not set this price. The residual book does. A county that treats inbound vans as proof the coast is fine has confused a moving truck with a solvent carrier.

Fort Myers and the barrier islands still look like a housing story from the road. The servicing report is a Citizens policy and a non-renewal from a name that used to write the zip code.

Unpack the boxes after you know whether Citizens is writing the policy.

The furniture can arrive in Tampa on a Saturday. The private policy may already have left Lee County.
