European power briefings often open with a map: a volcano, a green dot, a line to Scotland. The 2026 evidence is more contracted than the slide suggests. Iceland produces more electricity than its homes and shops need. Landsvirkjun sells most of the extra power to three aluminium smelters: Alcoa Fjardaál in the east, Rio Tinto ISAL near Reykjavík, and Century Aluminium at Grundartangi. IceLink is a planned high-voltage cable to Scotland. It has not been built. Without it, none of that power can be sold in Europe. The surplus is real. So is the gap between Icelandic generation and a European socket.

Landsvirkjun already has customers
Landsvirkjun is not hunting for a buyer. It already has three. Alcoa's Fjardaál smelter sits at Reyðarfjörður on the east coast. Rio Tinto's ISAL plant is at Straumsvík. Century's plant is at Grundartangi in Hvalfjörður. All three were sited for a long-term power contract and a harbour that can take alumina in and metal out. They are why Iceland's surplus already has a job.
Kárahnjúkar was built to feed the east-coast smelter. Hellisheiði and Nesjavellir sit on the Hengill field and feed the southwest. Those plants already have customers. A slide that treats Iceland as spare European capacity is treating a contracted smelter load as a surplus sitting in a drawer. The smelters take a large, steady load next to a harbour. That is why they were built in Iceland.
Europe can look at the map. It cannot take the power. That is the whole European problem, stated as two working plant clusters and one missing cable. Irish data centres wait on EirGrid for grid connection. German industry pays a German bill. Those are separate problems. Icelandic hydro and geothermal do not fix them.
Alcoa, Rio Tinto, and Century are the address
Alcoa Fjardaál is the east-coast name on the contract. Rio Tinto ISAL is the Reykjavík-side name most readers see on a metals screen. Century Aluminium at Grundartangi is the third leg on the same map. None of those names is interchangeable with IceLink. They are customers with harbours, not a cable landing in Scotland.
A working link would let a British or European buyer take Icelandic power at the far landing. That buyer does not have that option today. Landsvirkjun already sells to the three smelters because those contracts were the point of building Kárahnjúkar and the Hengill plants in the first place. Name who already bought the output before you praise the surplus.
IceLink is planned, not in the water
IceLink is the name used for a high-voltage direct-current link from Iceland to Scotland. Studies have costed it. Conferences have shown the route. No cable has been laid. Kárahnjúkar, Hellisheiði and Nesjavellir already work. IceLink does not. That is the whole European problem, stated as two plant clusters and one missing cable.
Building the cable would take a political decision in both countries, a landing on each coast, years of work, and a ship that can find a fault in winter. None of that is mysterious. None of it has happened. A cable of that length needs agreement in Reykjavík and in Britain, two landing stations, and a repair plan for the North Atlantic. National Grid knows interconnectors. This one is still a study and a conference slide.
Landsvirkjun already has customers. They are Alcoa Fjardaál, Rio Tinto ISAL, and Century at Grundartangi. IceLink is planned. Europe can look at the map. It cannot take the power until the cable is real.
