The 18 September page described a 14.81 VIX close with the S&P 500 at 7,650.5, up 0.17 percent, on a thin board. Friday 9 October the VIX closed 14.84, down 3.70 percent from Thursday at 15.41, and the S&P 500 closed 7,811.5, up 0.59 percent. The option level rhymes. The index is about 160 points higher.

The option level rhymes with September. The index does not.

Quiet options at 7,811 are not the same object as quiet options at 7,650. A reader who carries the September sentence forward is carrying the level and dropping the index. Both have to travel together or the sentence is about a different market.

This page does not borrow the old breadth

The September page had 28 percent of members advancing. This page does not have a fresh advancing count, so it does not reuse 28 percent. Calm can be broad or thin. Without the count, the only honest claim is the pair that did print: VIX 14.84, S&P 500 7,811.5.

A later session in which the VIX closes above 18 while the S&P 500 is still above 7,800 would make Friday calm rather than a ceiling. 14.84 is not that close. It is a low print on a higher index, three weeks after a low print on a lower one.

The VIX closed 14.84. The S&P 500 closed 7,811.5. September had 14.81 at 7,650.5.
