Escondida runs on a coastal desal plant, and Las Bambas still needs the road to Matarani.

Cerro Verde and Toquepala lift copper in Peru. Collahuasi in Chile drinks desalinated water and high-altitude power.

Thesis map

A copper pit in Peru or Chile still has to clear a pump, a desal plant, a road, and a port before Shanghai can take the metal.

Freeport-McMoRan Cerro Verde and Southern Copper Toquepala lift copper in Peru. Escondida and Collahuasi in Chile drink desalinated water and high-altitude power. Las Bambas depends on a road through Apurimac to Matarani. Shanghai can want the metal. The pump and the truck have to agree.

The chain

  1. 01

    The pit

Freeport still lifts copper at Cerro Verde. Southern Copper lifts at Toquepala. The pit is not the product until the pump and the truck agree.

  2. 02

    Pump and desal

Escondida and Collahuasi drink desalinated water and high-altitude power. The pump is the first scarce object after the rock.

  3. 03

    The road

Las Bambas depends on a road through Apurimac to Matarani. A blocked road is a pit that cannot ship. Shanghai cannot grade that road.

  4. 04

    The port

Matarani and the Chilean ports are where the metal leaves. The truck has to arrive. A demand slide in Shanghai does not load the berth.

Long side

Owns the scarce object. Named filing, named plant, named queue.

FCX

Freeport Cerro Verde

Cerro Verde, Peru

Freeport still lifts copper at Cerro Verde. That pit is a pump and a truck before it is a Chinese demand story. Keep Grasberg on its own Indonesia file.

SCCO

Southern Copper

Toquepala, Peru

Southern Copper lifts at Toquepala in Peru. Same Andean water-and-power clock as Cerro Verde. Not a Shanghai tape.

long

Escondida

Escondida in Chile drinks desalinated water and high-altitude power. It is a water plant with trucks. A Chinese bid does not desalinate.

long

Las Bambas

Las Bambas depends on a road through Apurimac to Matarani. The road is the product. The pit is what the road has to carry.

Short side

Constrained by the chain, or a substitute that is not the product.

short

Shanghai bid

Shanghai can want the metal. That want is not a pump, a desal plant, or a road. Treating Chinese demand as the pit is the short.

short

Dry pit

A pit without water or power is a hole. Escondida without desal is not a copper company that quarter. The slide that skips the pump is furniture.

short

Demand slide

A demand slide that names China and skips Cerro Verde water is the wrong ledger. The pump and the truck have to agree before Shanghai prints.

How they interconnect

  • The pitneedsPump and desal

The pit needs the pump and the desal plant. Rock in the ground without water is not a tonne at the port.

  • Pump and desalthenThe road

Water and power then need a road. Las Bambas is the case where the truck is the scarce object after the pump.

  • The roadreachesThe port

The road has to reach Matarani or the Chilean berth. Shanghai does not load that truck.

  • Freeport Cerro VerdeliftsThe pit

Freeport lifts at Cerro Verde. That is the named Peruvian pit on this page. Grasberg is a different license file.

  • Southern CopperliftsThe pit

Southern Copper lifts at Toquepala. Same Andean clock, second named pit, still not a Chinese tape.

  • EscondidadrinksPump and desal

Escondida drinks desalinated water and high-altitude power. The water plant is the long object, not the demand slide.

  • Las BambasneedsThe road

Las Bambas needs the Apurimac road to Matarani. The road is how the pit becomes a tonne.

  • Shanghai biddoes not gradeFreeport Cerro Verde

A Shanghai bid does not grade Freeport water at Cerro Verde. Chinese demand is not the pump.

  • Dry pitidlesEscondida

A dry pit idles Escondida. Desal and power are the running objects. A demand slide does not restart them.

  • Demand slideskipsThe port

A demand slide that skips the road and the pump skips the port. The truck still has to agree.

If you believe the thesis

Copper mines fail on water and power, not on Chinese demand. Escondida is a water plant with trucks. Las Bambas is a road with a pit. Freeport still lifts at Cerro Verde only while the pump runs.

If the thesis is incorrect

Two consecutive quarters in which Cerro Verde, Escondida, or Las Bambas name water, power, or the road as no longer binding while Chinese demand is still the slide would spend the pump thesis. A Shanghai bid does not move a truck in Apurimac.

Chile’s intakes and Peru’s tarmac are the year, not a footnote.

BHP files Escondida’s water trip as operations. The metal is the easy noun.
