A GPU already survived orbit. Starcloud-1 flew an H100 in November 2025. The week of 14 to 21 August was not about that fact. It was about a date, a raise, and a file. Musk said orbital compute is the only way to scale AI, probably sometime in 2029. Johnston of Starcloud said mainstream by 2028, not 2029, because ground halls are becoming hard to permit. Reuters, on the 21st, printed the money: $250 million at a $2.3 billion valuation, Nvidia and Cisco in, a 100,000-square-foot plant, 100 satellites a week.
The FCC file attached to that sentence is 88,000 satellites and 20 gigawatts. The booked hardware is two 8-kilowatt rideshares. SpaceNews, the same week, said Falcon 9 rideshares are gone past late 2028 or early 2029. TNW put the contradiction in one line: they raised to buy rockets they cannot book. A raise is not a launch. A file is not a customer.
An FCC integer is not a launch
Fly-the-GPU is a pile of integers. Starcloud. SpaceX Starmind and a million-sat file. Cowboy Space after Aetherflux's May pivot. Startup Orbital's 100,000-sat June file. The customer those files name first is a government inference account. The customer they name second is a terrestrial AI lab. The customer they name third is a political system that will not permit another hall. Heat area, a ruggedized chip, and a fairing sit in front of all three.
Nvidia Space-1 Vera Rubin is the chip in that sentence. It is not yet a part you can order. Until it is, the 88,000-sat file is a radiator on paper. Starcloud-1 proved an H100 can run in LEO. It did not prove a cluster can bill a named terrestrial lab. Those are different objects.
Starcloud is the exposed raise
The $250 million round is the one print the week actually produced. Nvidia is an investor. Cisco is an investor. The plant is 100,000 square feet. The cadence they sold is 100 satellites a week. The power they filed is 20 gigawatts. The hardware they have booked is two rideshares at about 8 kilowatts each. Flatten those sentences into one orbital-compute trade and you get a false headline. Do not flatten them.
Johnston's 2028 and Musk's 2029 can both be talk. The dated objects underneath them are smaller. Starcloud-2, or a peer node in the same 8-kilowatt class, is the 2027 object. A billed orbital cluster of at least 1 megawatt to a named terrestrial AI customer is the 2028 object. Neither printed in the week of 14 to 21 August. The raise did.
A beam is not a hall
The other shape leaves the chips on a truck route. Overview Energy's April deal is to send up to 1 gigawatt into Meta farms when the sun is down: collection in GEO, near-infrared into arrays that already exist, a demonstration in 2028, commercial service in 2030. Walter-Range said that looks easier than putting the data centres in space. The customer is a night-time capacity factor, not a new hall in Virginia.
Google Suncatcher is the third shape, and the smallest. Two TPU satellites with Planet, dawn-dusk sun-synchronous orbit, early 2027. A research blog that named a year. That is the object this decade can actually date. A pair on orbit by the middle of 2027 is a prototype. It is not 20 gigawatts.
Nvidia sits on more than one side. Investor in Starcloud. Designer of the space chip. Supplier to SpaceX's NVL72 sentence. Meta sits on the beam-down side. Alphabet sits on the two-prototype side. Amazon sits on the ground, building Leo and halls at the same time. That is the tell that the largest cloud buyer has not yet moved the GPU off the truck route.
What a raise cannot do
Power is the ground version of Musk's permitting sentence. If IRAS and prove-your-own-power make Virginia late, the 88,000-sat files get written faster. They do not get flown faster. Tokens can cheapen while halls stay scarce. Orbital compute is what you file when you believe the hall is the thing that will be illegal. A Starcloud round is not a gold print. It is not a megawatt invoice either.
Space is not a sector on this page. It is a logistics hedge. The week produced a valuation and a plant size. It did not produce a named terrestrial customer, a metered beam onto a named array, or a Suncatcher pair. Overview's 2028 demonstration is still a calendar. Suncatcher's early 2027 pair is still a blog year. Starcloud's two rideshares are still two rideshares.
A refutation would look like this: Starcloud-2, or a peer 8-kilowatt node, is on orbit by the end of 2027; or a named terrestrial AI customer is billed for at least 1 megawatt of orbital compute by the end of 2028; or Overview meters a beam onto a named terrestrial array by the end of 2028; or the Suncatcher pair is on orbit by 30 June 2027. A Reuters raise on 21 August is none of those.
The honest uncertainty is which object arrives first. If the two rideshares fly and no one is billed, the file is still a file. If Overview meters a gigawatt into a Meta farm while the GPU stays on the ground, beam-down is the space answer and fly-the-GPU is not. If Suncatcher puts two TPUs on orbit in early 2027 and Starcloud has not, the dated prototype belongs to Alphabet, not to the $2.3 billion private company. Those three sentences can live in the same year. An 88,000-sat integer is a fact about one filing. Two 8-kilowatt rideshares are a fact about one manifest. Neither is a compute layer.
