A satellite phone is not a dish

A phone that sees a satellite is not the same product as a dish on a roof.

Direct-to-phone, dish internet, and a messaging-first network are not one space-mobile trade. AST SpaceMobile printed 13 satellites on 5 August, BlueBirds 11 to 13, 20,000 square feet of array. The 10 August EX-99.1 named 60-plus mobile operators, 3 billion subscribers on paper, a $1.30 billion backlog, and a $150 to $200 million fiscal 2026 guide. Starlink already sells text. Amazon Leo is about 391 satellites under a 5 June penalty. Rocket Lab bid $8 billion for Iridium on 29 June. Flatten those sentences and you get a false headline. Do not flatten them.

SpaceX, on its first earnings call, said it would build terrestrial small cells and compete with US mobile operators. That is the unlisted company trying to become the carrier. AST is the listed array. They are not the same object.

AST is the exposed array

The EX-99.1 is the letter the week actually produced. Block 2 approaching 200 Mbps. 3,000 of about 5,600 US cells lit. Japan live with Rakuten. Continuous coverage still wants about 45 satellites, slipped to early 2027 after New Glenn went away and Falcon took three at a time. The FCC special temporary authority on 14 August covers 100 handsets for 30 days, non-commercial. A backlog is not a bill. A temporary authority is not a customer.

A backlog is not a bill

Avellan's sentence is why AT&T and Verizon are still in the room: AST will not become a tower company. SpaceX's sentence is why the room exists: the launch vendor is becoming a carrier. T-Mobile already sold Starlink text. A US operator joint venture that AST says could add a third or fourth home network is a defensive object as much as a distribution object. The $150 to $200 million guide is a number for one year. It is not 3 billion subscribers.

Text is not broadband

Starlink direct-to-cell is 650-plus dedicated birds, text and about 34 apps, commercially live since July 2025, in 22 countries. That product exists. AST's sentence is unmodified-phone broadband. Those are different products. A Starlink V2 mobile broadband that sells at useful speeds in 2027 while AST is still in beta would make the unmodified-phone sentence a museum label. Text in 22 countries is not that sentence.

Leo is a penalty, not a late Starlink

Amazon Leo is about 391 satellites. Weber, on 2 July, said initial service this year. The FCC waiver of 5 June demotes spectrum priority on every satellite after 30 July until March 2028, or until 1,618 birds are up. That is a 391-satellite high-latitude service about to open under a Commission penalty. It is not late Starlink. The Amazon-Globalstar file is about $11 billion, 5,105 satellites, direct-to-device, 2028. Lynk and Omnispace became Elveo Mobile on 17 August. Those are three more objects. Do not merge them.

What a cashtag cannot do

Varda and United Therapeutics, on 13 May, are the only space-medicine contract with a named molecule class and a return vehicle. Rocket Lab flies the Pioneer bus. ISS retirement is a rent negotiation, not a hospital. Neutron's window is narrowing, per the 10 August 8-K. First flight may be 2027. 400 Archimedes hotfires do not substitute for a Wallops static fire. Falcon rideshares are booked through 2028 and 2029. Every connectivity file on this page assumes a fairing that is no longer for sale.

A refutation would look like this: 45 AST satellites operational by the end of June 2027; or AST names commercial direct-to-device revenue in a 2026 filing; or Amazon consumer Leo in a named band by the end of 2026; or Neutron flies by the end of June 2027; or Starlink V2 mobile broadband is selling at useful speeds in 2027 while AST is still in beta. A 5 August satellite count is none of those.

The honest uncertainty is which product bills first. If AST lights the rest of the US cells and still has no named commercial line, the backlog is still a backlog. If Starlink text stays the product people actually buy, broadband on an unmodified phone is still a sentence. If Leo opens under the penalty and the 1,618 count is late, Weber's post was ops and the waiver was the object. Those three sentences can live in the same year. Thirteen satellites are a fact about one array. Six hundred and fifty birds are a fact about one text service. Neither is a space-mobile trade.

Private rounds and unlisted vehicles are named as counterparties, not as recommendations.
