A 14.81 close on 28 percent advancing is quiet, not a close above 18.

Friday 18 September the VIX closed 14.81, down 4.08 percent, and the S&P 500 closed 7,650.5 with 28 percent advancing, so that close tagged a thin green average.

A green average on 28 percent advancing is not a panic close, and it is not a breadth thrust.

It is also not a breadth thrust. The average hid a list. Health Care led the five-day heat. Communications and Utilities sat at the bottom of that same heat. Recasting 14.81 as fear leaving, or as fear arriving in disguise, is the same flattening the 11 September page already refused. Equity options printed a number. The board printed a fraction. Write both.

The clock is still a later session

The published clock asked for gold above 4,500 on every session of a named window, and for the VIX to close above 18 at least once. Gold left 4,500 on 1 September. Wednesday 16 September the VIX closed 18.09 from 17.47, a session rise of 3.55 percent, with gold at 4,310.5, below 4,500. That close left the clock void. Friday 18 September at 14.81 sits farther from 18. A close above 18 while gold is still the squeeze would be a different print.

Euro Stoxx closed 6,236.2, down 1.37 percent. The FTSE 100 closed 10,659.1, down 1.45 percent. Those two boards are on another page. They do not turn a 14.81 VIX into a transatlantic fear close. The Nikkei closed 65,018.9, up 1.38 percent. Three geographies, three objects. Friday New York options are one of them.

If you believe the clock, you already believe gold can leave 4,500 without waking equity options, and you now also believe a 5.00 percent coupon and a thin green average are not enough to wake them either. If you are wrong, the VIX closes above 18 while gold is still bid as the squeeze. Then Friday was quiet rather than void. 14.81 is the number that makes quiet tempting.

The VIX closed 14.81. The S&P 500 rose 0.17 percent on 28 percent advancing. The clock is still void.
